5 Tricks to Stop your Dog Chewing
Puppies love to get up to mischief. Destroying furniture and shoes seems to come naturally to them. In this article I will teach you 5 simple things you can do to stop your puppy chewing for good.
The first thing you need to do is to get your dog checked out by a vet. Sometimes puppies and dogs chew due to underlying medical reason’s, we need to make sure that everything is ok with our dogs before proceeding with this training.
Chewing is natural, but you need to decide what is acceptable and what isn’t. Puppies chew as a form of learning (just like human babies) so it shouldn’t be banned totally. Apart from just protecting your house, you also need to teach dogs what they can’t chew because of dangers in chewing – such as electric cables etc.
The “No” command is the easiest thing you can use to teach your dog what can and can’t be chewed on. Tell your dog “No” in a firm way anytime it starts to chew on something it shouldn’t be. Then remove the item from the dog in a slow but authoritative manner. If your puppy resist, squirt water in its face and then take the object.
When you move to take the object away from your dog, make sure you do it in a controlled manner. Don’t rush up to take it away as this may get your dog thinking that you want to play.
The idea is not to destroy your dogs chewing aspirations. You should encourage it to chew on chew toys, bones and crunchy biscuits instead of your shoes.
Watch out for aggressive unexpected reaction when you try to remove your dogs favourite chew toy. Some dogs will resist the removal of one of “their” possessions.
Use the tips mentioned above to train your dog what can and can’t be chewed. In time and with a little persistence your dog will know exactly what she should and shouldn’t be chewing.
